Avant-garde and modern

About the collection

At the beginning of the 20th century in both European and Ukrainian art, new artistic currents prevailed - modernism and avant-garde.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, both European and Ukrainian art were dominated by new artistic movements, such as modernism and the avant-garde. In Ukraine, the development of the newest trends was promoted by creative intellectuals and artists who realized that folk art, as the basis of national culture, would serve to further develop the creative process.

In different regions of Ukraine, cultural centers and workshops were organized in family estates to revive traditional crafts of carpet weaving, weaving, embroidery, pottery, and carving. Professional innovative artists were invited to work in them, including Yevheniia Prybyliiska in the village of Skoptsi (now Veselynivka) in Kyiv oblast, Nataliia Davydova and her invited guests Oleksandra Ekster and Kazymyr Malevych in the village of Verbivka in Cherkasy oblast. In these workshops, folk artists Hanna Sobachko-Shostak, Vasyl Dovhoshyia, and Yevhen Pshechenko worked under the guidance of the artists and alongside them.

Such cooperation inspired new ideas of professional artists and significantly expanded the worldview of folk artists, which gave Ukraine artists of bright individual expression who masterfully mastered line, rhythm, and color.
