About the collection

The National Museum of Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art owns over 14,000 ceramic exhibits.

The oldest pieces dating from the XV c. now allows us to see the development of this art during the half of the millennium.

Ceramic is one of the oldest and most common types of folk art in our country. For centuries, generations of potters have created an infinite number of forms, decorative motifs, color variations. Ukraine has extremely rich deposits of high quality clay of different types, from red to white kaolin needed in the production of earthenware and porcelain. This art of ceramics in our country has become well developed.

The museum fully represents all regions of pottery making. Among many centers with high artistic level we can name such villages as Dybyntsi (Kiev region), Sunky (Cherkasy region), Opishne (Poltava region), Smotrych (Vinnytsa region), town Bar (Khmelnitsky region).

s well as villages Kosiv and Kolomyia in Ivano-Frankivsk region. Collection of ceramics are among the best in Ukraine. Art works of A. Nachovnyk (1853-1913), F. Chyrvenko (1868-1919) and other famous artists are represented. Most of the art works in the collection – about 9,000 exhibits – are made by contemporary professional artists and folk artists. Among them N. Fedorova (1907-1993), D. Golovko (1905-1978), V. Protor’yev (1924-1997), N. Protor’yeva, M. Denysenko, P. Pechornyy, N. Isupova, L . Bohynskyy, A. Ilyinsky and others. On the basis of the collection museum has already published a large number of albums, books and articles.
